Marine chain break load testing is a critical step in ensuring that the chain is strong enough to withstand the stresses of marine anchoring environments.
Minimum Break Load (MBL) may also be referred to as Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) or Minimum Breaking Force (MBF). MBL is quoted in kilonewtons (KN). KN is a metric unit of force used to account for both static and dynamic loads (ocean currents, wave or wind forces). The quoted MBL in KN is used to help select the right chain for your boat and planned use.
MBL is the load at which a marine anchor chain will fail under controlled test conditions and established by the marine chain manufacturer through destructive testing of representative samples. MBL represents the lowest achieved breaking load across the population of tested samples.
All Ozzi Marine chain has the MBL for each chain provided and each batch of chain tested by a NATA accredited facility to ensure conformance with certificates available upon request.
1. Select a representative sample of the chain: A representative sample of the chain from the same batch is selected for testing with the sample size large enough to provide statistically significant results.
By only using NATA accredited organisations, Ozzi Marine provides customers with the security of knowing they have a proven, independently assessed benchmark of performance.
2. Prepare the chain for testing: The chain is prepared for testing by ensuring that the chain is clean and dry and representative of the batch.
3. Apply the load: The chain is loaded via a calibrated hydraulic testing machine which gradually increases the pulling force until the marine anchor chain physically fails / breaks.
4. Record the results: The loads at which the various chain samples break is recorded with the lowest (not the average) breaking load from the representative samples used to confirm / establish the MBL.
5. Analyse the results: The results of the test are analysed to ensure they conform with the published minimum breaking load (MBL) for the marine anchor chain. This information is used to help determine the right anchor chain for your boat.
6. Certification: 6. Once the chain has passed the minimum break load test, it is certified to meet the relevant standards for strength, and the batch receives a NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) test certificate. This certification provides assurance that the chain meets its published performance, is safe and reliable for use in marine environments.
