Material testing: The raw materials used to make the chain are tested for their chemical composition and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. This ensures that the chain is made from high-quality materials that can withstand the stresses of harsh marine environments.
Manufacturing process testing: The manufacturing process has strict quality controls and is closely monitored and tested to ensure that the chain is produced to the required specifications. This involves testing processes that include the heat treatment, cutting / shaping, welding and galvanisation.
Proof testing: Once the chain is manufactured, every production batch undergoes a non-destructive proof test to verify its strength / load bearing capacity. The chain is loaded in a controlled test bed and held under load for a specified period (dwell time). The chain is then inspected for elongation or distortion. This test ensures that the chain can withstand the stresses of normal use.
Break testing: In addition to the proof test, representative samples of each batch of chain undergo a minimum break load (MBL) test to confirm their ultimate strength. This destructive test involves loading the chain to failure to determine the lowest achieved breaking load. Each batch of chain is tested by a NATA accredited facility to ensure conformance with certificates available upon request. Certification: Once the chain has passed all the required tests, it is certified to meet the relevant standards. This certification ensures that the chain is safe and reliable for use in marine environments.
